The government has an opportunity to protect North Atlantic right whales from fatal fishing gear entanglements. We need to speak up and tell them that we want to save right whales from these very preventable injuries and deaths.

Please ramp up efforts to protect North Atlantic right whales from fatal fishing gear entanglements. Ropeless fishing gear needs to be funded, permitted, and encouraged. By rolling out ropeless gear in key places and times, we can prevent the entanglements that threaten the future of right whales. 

NOAA should promote ropeless gear as a valuable tool for North Atlantic right whale recovery and ensure that the years of work by fishermen, regulators, scientists, states, and conservation organizations to bring this technology from concept to reality are not wasted. Having benefited from this collective investment and innovation, NOAA should not abandon its responsibility to advance right whale recovery at the behest of a small number of individuals who refuse to seriously consider a technology that has demonstrated its potential to reduce entanglement risk while sustaining fishing opportunities. 

The fishing industry and right whales can co-exist, but we need every tool at our disposal to make this a reality.
