Defend Our Marine Monument

Since Donald Trump took office in 2017, his administration has been on a mission to dismantle our national monuments on the land and in the ocean. Now, he has undone protections for our Northeast Canyons and Seamounts Marine National Monument, the only U.S. marine monument in the Atlantic Ocean.

By allowing commercial fishing in the monument, endangered whales, fragile coral communities, and other rare marine life are at risk. Tell your elected officials that our marine monuments deserve continued protection.

The Trump administration has gutted protections for the Northeast Canyons and Seamounts Marine National Monument by allowing commercial fishing in its boundaries. This is part of their attack on one of America's most important conservation tools, the Antiquities Act. This act protects our treasured places on land and in the ocean.

Please defend the Antiquities Act and support New England's precious marine monument — the only one in the U.S. Atlantic Ocean— by speaking out against President Trump's harmful proclamation.

Our monument, designated in September 2016, protects ancient and fragile coral communities, endangered whales, and an abundance of unique and rare marine life. Prohibiting commercial fishing and other industrial activities is essential for this ecosystem to survive.
 
The monument designation protects the canyons and seamounts from these threats. It is illegal, irresponsible, and unnecessary to change the designation in any way. Such changes will jeopardize the health of our ocean, threatening the livelihoods of our coastal communities and tourism-driven economy.

As New Englanders, our legacy is deeply connected to the sea. At a time when climate change and ocean acidification are also threatening our waters, this monument must remain protected to give future generations the best chance of inheriting a healthy ocean.

Please be leaders for our region and safeguard the Antiquities Act by demanding that President Trump keep the Northeast Canyons and Seamounts protected for all New Englanders.
