Take Action: Bottle Bills for New England

Our recycling system is failing us. The reason? It wasn’t designed to manage all our packaging waste. But there is good news. There is a system that can effectively collect, process, and recycle our beverage containers.

Bottle bills place a refundable deposit on bottles and cans that consumers get back when they return their empty containers. These programs are free for consumers because beverage companies pay the handling fees that fund the system. Plus, they’re the most effective mechanism for collecting and recycling large volumes of empty beverage containers.

I know a better way to deal with all the waste created by beverage companies: a good bottle bill. 

This system can effectively collect, process, and recycle all these beverage containers. Bottle bills place a refundable deposit on bottles and cans that consumers get back when they return the empty containers.  

These programs have zero cost to consumers because beverage companies pay the handling fees that fund the system. Plus, they’ve proven to be the most effective mechanism for collecting and recycling large volumes of empty beverage containers. 

Despite the proven success of bottle bills, the Big Beverage industry has spent years sabotaging attempts to improve them. They have hindered efforts to create new or better bottle bills so they can avoid taking responsibility for their waste. 

We need to move past corporate opposition. To do that, we need a modern bottle bill that includes the following characteristics: 

1. Strong oversight and enforcement of the program 

2. Explicit performance targets for using refillable beverage containers 

3. Strong and enforceable performance standards for recycling rates 

4. Inclusion of beverage containers from miniatures to 3 liters 

5. Deposit value of at least 10 cents to incentivize returns 

6. Universal return-to-retail to ensure accessibility to all residents 

7. Fair handling fees to retailers and redemption centers 

8. Transparent reporting and compliance requirements 

9. Reinvestment of unredeemed deposits to the program 

Our communities and our planet must come first. To do that, we need modern Zero Waste legislation in place to tackle the plastic and waste management crisis. A strong bottle bill can help get us there. Will you take action to protect our health and environment on my behalf?
