Stop the Greenwashing: Tell the UN to Drop Edelman from COP30

The climate crisis is accelerating—and the world is gathering at COP30 in Brazil to confront it. But behind the scenes, something deeply troubling is happening. Host country Brazil has hired Edelman, a PR firm known for helping fossil fuel giants like Shell and Chevron protect their image and delay climate action, to serve as the media consultant for the conference, via a contract awarded through the UN. This is more than a conflict of interest. It’s a betrayal.

In the past, UN Secretary-General António Guterres has called out the danger of firms that enable greenwashing. Now, one of those very enablers is being handed a platform at the most important climate summit of the year. We cannot let this stand. Tell Secretary-General Guterres to stand by his words and call on Brazil to end Edelman's contract. The integrity of COP30—and the future of our planet—depends on it.

Dear Secretary-General António Guterres,

I'm writing to express my deep concern regarding the hiring of Edelman, a public relations firm with longstanding ties to major fossil fuel companies, to support communications for COP30, the upcoming United Nations Climate Change Conference in Brazil.

This decision stands in stark contradiction to the urgent climate leadership the world so desperately needs. Edelman has represented clients such as Shell and Chevron—companies whose business models are fundamentally at odds with the goals of the Paris Agreement and the science-based imperative to phase out fossil fuels.

You've rightly called out the fossil fuel industry and its PR and advertising partners for their role in greenwashing and delaying climate action before. Yet, by allowing a firm with deep fossil fuel affiliations to shape the public narrative around COP30, the UN risks legitimizing the very greenwashing you condemned.

This is not just a matter of optics—it is a matter of integrity. The credibility of COP30, and of the UN’s climate leadership, depends on ensuring that those who profit from climate delay are not given a platform to influence or obscure the truth.

We respectfully urge you to call on Brazil to cancel Edelman's contract and seek communications support from firms without fossil fuel conflicts of interest.

The world is watching. I ask you to stand with science, with justice, and with the millions of people demanding real climate action—not fossil fuel spin.
