Protect Endangered Whales from Speeding Boats and Ships

Critically endangered North Atlantic right whales deserve an ocean where they can swim freely and safely. Allowing boats and ships to speed through areas where we know right whale mothers and babies are present could spell the end of this species.

We need to speak up on behalf of these gentle giants who can’t speak for themselves. Please use your voice to tell the Trump administration that you want to protect North Atlantic right whales.

I oppose any attempts to get rid of or undermine the 2008 North Atlantic Right Whale Vessel Speed Rule. North Atlantic right whales need more protection, not less. These protections reduce the risk of vessel strikes – a leading cause of death – to right whales by nearly 90 percent. Proposed alternatives, like satellite or acoustic monitoring, do not detect all whales and for a variety of reasons simply cannot replace the current rule. Speed limits are the only effective, proven, and broadly available tool to prevent dangerous collisions between vessels and endangered whales.
